People who encountered panic attacks can develop a level of apprehension and fear to the place where the panic or anxiety attack took place. Sometimes this results in avoiding the place altogether or even avoiding similar places that could remind that person of the attack that could then trigger another attack.

When these feelings occur, whether mild anxiety or a full blown panic attack, the mind is very confused because there is no logical reason why an attack or episode should happen at a particular place or time. It is baffling to us what the panic attack cause is and we tend to keep it to ourself, because if we don’t understand it, neither would anyone else that we might tell. So we suffer in silence. I used to get high anxiety levels driving longer distances. Shorter, in town trips, usually did not bother me depending on the day. But, when I would go to work, there is one particular intersection where I would almost certainly have to stop due to a red light. This intersection would almost always make me so uncomfortable and give me a feeling I don’t even know how to describe. I would inch the car forward, turn the steering wheel, and want to flee this intersection. But, there I was, trapped between cars waiting for that darn long light to change to green. Usually once I left the intersection I was OK. I would also get the same feeling on a certain stretch of highway driving at 65 mph. It all made no sense.

If this cycle gets bad enough, then you will start avoiding the area or spot that it occurs. Instead of solving the fear or anxiety issue, you are building a strong foundation that when a similar situation arises, the anxiety and panic attack will rear its ugly head again, only stronger next time. Do not let your mind trick you into believing that your anxiety is something you will always have to struggle with. Do not avoid these locations. Let the thoughts in as they occur. Accept and embrace them. The more comfortable you can become with them, the better. The uncomfortable thoughts will not go away fully initially, but what you can learn is to change your reaction to them. By changing your reaction to the anxious thoughts you become free of them.
