Gray Market Piano buy or not buy? any experts?
Hi, I am considering purchasing a Grand Piano for my younger sister. I’m considering buying either a used Kawai or a Yamaha. I’ve been looking through some buying guides online and some argue that a gray market piano should be avoided at all costs.. although they may be relatively cheaper, they have a high likelihood of physical deterioration.. and some argue that the lower price would overweight this very unlikely possibility of it being deteriorated overtime.. based on your expertise in this industry would you say that there are serious differences between a gray market piano and just a regular one? if so please let me know the pros & cons of purchasing a gray market piano. I’ll be counting on your responses. thank you very much.
I read a newpaper article on Yamaha several years ago about the quantity of their production. A little over 250,000 a year. This has created a glut of used Yamaha pianos in the used piano market.
Yamaha wants you to buy a new piano, not a used refurbished piano so they came up with the marketing scheme that apparently 65dart believes ” Do not buy a piano built in Japan here in the United States because it was not built for the American Climate”.
If that were true, which US climate did they choose to design around? Arizona or Florida?
It is up to the individual to provide the proper environment for their piano, not the other way around.
Yamaha recently shut down their American production and moved everything to Indonesia. This tells me they are not really too concerned about quality.
Gray market pianos are refurbished in several places. If I was going to purchase a refurbished Yamaha I would only look at ones that were refurbished in Japan, not China, not Indonesia and I would only look at pianos larger that 6′ and I would look for one made before 1985. I would stay away from their smaller pianos.
There is a company called “Doremi USA” in Orlando, Florida, call them and find out who they sell to in your area. I am very familiar with the quality of their refurbished Yamaha’s. Expect to pay $9000 to $13,000. If you find one less that this, beware. Have your piano technician check it out.
The newspaper article I referred to also mentioned that the head of Yamaha had a Steinway in his home.
