What type of piano is good and safe to buy?
I’m searching for a piano but I want to be smart about it.I’m a a beginner so I want a piano at home as well with me taking lessons. Is there a specific type I should by or certain prices I should be looking for. Where could one go to buy one, Is there pianos I should watch out for or ones I should keep and eye on. I’m not looking to cut cost but it would be nice so any suggestions are welcomed….
If you’re a beginner, steer clear of a baby grand or grand; if you end up quitting it will be a total waste of money, as those types are quite high in pricing. Even if you do find a really cheap, too-good-to-be-true grand off of craigslist, etc, it will most likely end up being a complete wreck that will require you to spend 3 times more than what you originally paid for on repairs.
It would be best for you to find a nice, second-hand upright from a reputable music or piano store. There is absolutely nothing wrong with uprights, they are actually far more practical than grands; they take up less room, they cost less, and they don’t sound any worse. Some good brands to check out are King or Kholer and Campbell, they’re really sturdy and the ones I’ve played on or head have an excellent tone quality. Of course, all pianos are different, even if they come from the same manufacturer. You just have to try them out and see which out you like!
Finally, stay away from the “big names” of the piano industry, like Steinway and Baldwin, at this point, even their uprights are pretty expensive.
Another way you can lower cost is by not purchasing a piano with ivory keys. They can actually be a real pain to maintain and clean, and a piano really won’t sound any different if they’re substituted with a plastic type.
